Thursday Journey: The Extraordinary Adventures of Abraham and Sarah
Is your faith so strong that you would trust a promise when everything around you suggests it cannot possibly come true?
Would you leave home, family, and everything familiar to follow a God you were only beginning to know?
Would you pack up your life and leave for a place that would only be revealed one step at a time?
Believe it or not, this is exactly what Abraham and Sarah did. Our Genesis journey continues on September 17 at Thursday Journey with the extraordinary story of Abraham and Sarah, an ordinary, aging couple through whom God chooses to bless the whole world. They begin their journey of faith by leaving their home and family for an unknown land — this in response to the call from a God they are just beginning to know. Along the way, we will find them:
struggling with doubt and delay;
welcoming unexpected visitors;
responding to the births of Ishmael and Isaac;
wrestling with difficult decisions;
and discovering again and again God’s faithfulness.
With Abraham and Sarah we will ponder some of Scripture’s greatest themes: call, blessing, covenant, promise, hospitality, trust, and God’s enduring faithfulness. And we will discover their questions, struggles, and joys still speak to our own lives today. We will explore together the history, culture, and language behind the passages, then spend some time talking about the story, its theology, its themes, and its messages. We invite you to join us as we discover how these two ordinary people became foundational figures of faith for Judaism and Christianity—and, remarkably, for Islam as well.
