Bible Study June 22: Amos Speaks - An Urgent Call to Do Justice in a World Mired in the Poverty of Abundance
Rev. Chuck Bentjen
A theological workshop and Bible study called “Amos Speaks: An Urgent Call to Do Justice in a World Mired in the Poverty of Abundance” is coming on June 22 from 5:30p to 7:00p to Lutheran Church of the Foothills. Join Rev. Chuck Bentjen, Bethany Boyd’s cousin, for a special presentation exploring the deep, often uncomfortable difference between charity and true, biblical justice.
If you ask a faithful Christian to list common faith practices, you will likely hear things like prayer, study, worship, and service. But what about the promise we make in our Baptismal Covenant to “strive for justice and peace in all the earth”? What does “justice” look like Biblically? In the eighth century B.C., the prophet Amos condemned a prosperous nation that worshipped its “manna piles” and relied on empty religious rituals while exploiting the vulnerable. Come discover why his message is still so relevant today. Rev. Bentjen will lead you to ask hard questions about the “poverty of abundance,” systemic poverty, and how we are called to step forward as a public church.
If you are unable to attend in person, check back to this news blog for a Zoom link that will be made available closer to the date of the workshop.
