Help Alleviate Hunger

“for I was hungry and you gave me food” (Matthew 25:35)

Worldwide, about 720 million people are hungry; over 47 million of those people are in the United States.

To help alleviate this suffering Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) World Hunger walks alongside ELCA congregations, Lutheran churches worldwide, and trusted partners. Congregations and global companions identify local needs and solutions; ELCA World Hunger joins to make those solutions real.

ELCA World Hunger Appeal Jar

Place your loose cash and coins in the jar just inside the main entrance to the worship area.

Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger fund clinics, microloans, clean water, livestock, meals and advocacy—sustainable solutions that address root causes of hunger.

How do you generous folks at Lutheran Church of the Foothills help to alleviate food insecurity? Let’s count the ways:

  1. When you give to our congregation’s general fund, our congregation passes along some of that gift (historically, close to 10%) as a benevolence offering to the Grand Canyon Synod, who in turn passes some of that gift along to ELCA churchwide ministries, including ELCA World Hunger.

  2. When you individually send a monetary gift designated for ELCA World Hunger directly to the ELCA.

  3. When you individually send a monetary gift designated for ELCA World Hunger through Lutheran Church of the Foothills.

  4. When you give gifts from the ELCA Good Gifts catalog (items in the catalog update frequently as needs change).

  5. When you participate in the 40-40-40 Region 2 Lenten Challenge for 2026, the proceeds of which will go to ELCA World Hunger.

  6. When you add your loose pocket/purse change to the ELCA World Hunger loose change jar (fish bowl that sits at the back of the Sanctuary).

  7. And when you act locally in various ways to help alleviate hunger in the Tucson area, including:

    1. Putting non-perishable food items in our basket for Interfaith Community Services (ICS) food banks here in Tucson (at the west end of the narthex).

    2. Volunteering for the dinner we provide once a month at Primavera Men’s Shelter.

    3. Providing grocery gift cards for our Thanksgiving meals focus in November.

    4. Packing food and emergency kits to be distributed by various organizations in town.

The ELCA World Hunger loose change jar in the back of our sanctuary is one example of how we live out our core values of Grace-filled, Inclusive, Generous, and Justice-focused.

The winter total is $129.50. ~ Ann K. and Liz Z.
