Your Contributions to the ELCA World Hunger Loose Change Jar Provide Food, Shelter, and Hope

Thank you for being a steadfast supporter of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) World Hunger. Your contributions to the loose change jar in the back of our sanctuary extend your Christian service to communities in 62 countries around the world and in 40 U.S. states and territories. Here’s how one family of women and children benefited from the loose change given from your pockets and purses:

A family — a mother, a grandmother and 10 children — were driven from their home in South Sudan several years ago and have been on the move ever since. They arrived at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Africa Mission clinic in Juba, South Sudan, nearly out of options. The women had to leave behind their husbands and had no way to communicate with them. “We are not sure if they are alive or not,” they said.

At the end of their long journey, they didn’t have a place to stay, or the food or medicine their kids needed. The staff at the mission’s medical center — which is supported by gifts to ELCA World Hunger — got to work caring for these women and their children right away. The staff helped them get settled, ensured that they were fed, and gave the kids medical treatment until they were all healthy. For this, the family said, “We thank God.”

The Juba clinic is the only place in the area where many women can safely deliver babies, kids can receive checkups and nutritional supplements, community members can get efficient lab tests and accurate diagnoses , and much more. In addition to the clinic, the mission in Juba is a vibrant hub for worship, spiritual care, education, vocational training and community-building.
