Staple Food Drive for Refugee Families
Since 2025, nearly 400,000 people have been removed from the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food benefits to low-income families. In addition, the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) has changed the eligible income level to the strictest in the United States and has implemented a confusing system of appeals and policy changes that leave refugees without food stamps for months or years.
You can help refugees who are food-insecure by contributing to the staple food drive during the month of June. Here is a list of items to be collected:
bags of onions, potatoes, apples
sugar
flour
salt
bags of dried beans, lentils
cooking oil
crunchy peanut butter
Tahini (sesame paste)
nuts, shelled or unshelled peanuts
honey
dates
whole frozen chickens (make plans with Iskashitaa ahead of time for delivery)
ground coffee
black tea
seasonings: garlic or onion powder, pepper, chili flakes
Look for the box and display in the Narthex. For more information, contact Barb Warrilow or Beth Daum.
