Staple Food Drive for Refugee Families

Since 2025, nearly 400,000 people have been removed from the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food benefits to low-income families. In addition, the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) has changed the eligible income level to the strictest in the United States and has implemented a confusing system of appeals and policy changes that leave refugees without food stamps for months or years.

You can help refugees who are food-insecure by contributing to the staple food drive during the month of June. Here is a list of items to be collected:

  • bags of onions, potatoes, apples

  • sugar

  • flour

  • salt

  • bags of dried beans, lentils

  • cooking oil

  • crunchy peanut butter

  • Tahini (sesame paste)

  • nuts, shelled or unshelled peanuts

  • honey

  • dates

  • whole frozen chickens (make plans with Iskashitaa ahead of time for delivery)

  • ground coffee

  • black tea

  • seasonings: garlic or onion powder, pepper, chili flakes

Look for the box and display in the Narthex. For more information, contact Barb Warrilow or Beth Daum.
