Everyone Is Welcome at Read & Yak Discussion: November 21, 12:00 noon
You are invited to participate in Read & Yak’s discussion of the non-fiction book Going Back to Bisbee by Richard Shelton. Due to Thanksgiving weekend, we will meet one week early–on Saturday, November 21, 2026–from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., in person in the Activities Room and online via Zoom. Click here to join the discussion via Zoom. Meeting ID: 822 7558 0676. Passcode: 844657.
Richard Shelton first came to southeastern Arizona in the 1950s as a soldier stationed at Fort Huachuca. He soon fell in love with the region and, upon his discharge, found a job as a schoolteacher in nearby Bisbee. He eventually became a professor at the University of Arizona and a teacher of writing in the Arizona State prisons. Going Back to Bisbee was published in 1992, and contains Shelton’s reflections on the history of the area, on the beauty of the landscape, and on his own life. Whether conveying the mystique of tarantulas or describing the mountain-studded topography, he brings a poet's eye to this seemingly desolate country.
“Shelton possesses great generosity of soul, a gift for observation, and golden sense of humor."—Booklist.
All are welcome at Read & Yak
From January through November Read & Yak gathers in the Activities Room on the fourth Saturday of each month from 12:00p to 1:30p (the November meeting is sometimes changed to a different Saturday due to the Thanksgiving weekend). Some participants join via Zoom from out of state or even from home in Tucson. Feel free to bring your lunch to enjoy as we yak. Even if you haven’t finished reading the book for the month, you are encouraged to join the discussion. You and your guests are always welcome; you do not need to be participants at Lutheran Church of the Foothills.
To receive calendar reminders for Read & Yak gatherings, email Holly Hope at hollyhopeaz@gmail.com (please include “Yak” somewhere in the subject line).
